We being educated since young to follow and listen to parent guidance and ways. However, mostly evolved into an opposite way "Rebellious" as the parental advise seem too old , not up to the trend, un-cool, unreasonable etc.  

To look further depth in it, these "Old school" thinking or ideas do have reasoning and rights to be made it known for all human kind goods.

What is this Confinement?

In recent trend, Confinement Care a.k.a “Zuo Ye Zi” (坐月子) in Mandarin and (坐月  co5 jyut6*2  ) in Cantonese; In Westerner term : Fourth Semester / Post natal care / Birth Care ; had become a rising popular term in women care.

Whether you are totally find it a ridiculous tradition to believe in OR for the sake to stop the elderly in family keep pestering you to do it...this confinement care is IMPORTANT for lots of reason.

Personally, I do understand and feel your disgust or IGNORE the rational of this care, as I been there myself. From the 1st birth that I m ignorance and obedient young mum that believer the goodness to hatred of it. Yet, I hold on the tradition and tested this tradition to a new level each time which my mum label me as "Rebellious Mum" of 6 children now.

Confinement is an old tradition that had been the common practice among Chinese for more than 2000years old and its runs in other region races in other part of the world too. For Chinese confinement, this had been well recorded in Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911). 

According to Yi-Li Wu, Associate Prof of history at Albion College in Michigan, described early Chinese medical writings described condition such as eclampsia, maternal tetanus and other postpartum diseases that are still deadly today if left untreated.

Chinese term : Refer as "Zuo Ye-坐月" or "Chuo Yuet" for a women who had give birth and being isolated taken care for 30 days - 45 days, traditionally by mother in law or their own mother and now is confinement nanny, to recuperate and nurture their body back to normal functioning.

A Moment Thought...

In the olden days medical context, some of practices do make sense such as; no bathing and teeth brushing was a way to prevent water borne illness while staying indoors helped woman and babies avoid exposure to communicable diseases.

True or False? 
There is "No definite True or False"..in the new era, we need to modify some practices due to some factors like different weather, countries and tradition belief. 

Confinement is widely known in Asian countries as this is one of the special event for the mothers and child during this childbirth period. However, this idea is foreign to Westerners but actually they are practicing birth care. 

As the time goes by and information advanced each day, Westerners began to practice confinement period too. Though there is no strong evidence showing its true beneficial of these old tradition practices, but there is not much denial the "True Benefit of Confinement Or Post Partum Care" to mother and baby. 

Its had been proven and clearly stated in World Health Organisation (WHO) that post partum care is crucial to ensure mother and baby be in the better health and safety. An article share by << WHO NCBI>>

Being a modern generation of confinement, I would highly recommend to be open mind in accepting some of the truth fact that need to be change (not blindly follow the typical old tradition without concern your comfort acceptance) as to ensure a better enjoyment for your confinement.

Yet, in some ways, we can still follow some olden day ritual due to our Asians body had been taken care with mainly Asian diet and environment.

Personally, I would pursue in endorsing term "Mother's Birth Care" as this is more related and respectable term. Let's Us Celebrate This Mother's Birth Care!
